Looking for a plant to add a punch of color to the front of your garden beds or patio containers? Sunjoy® Mini Saffron Barberry is the shrub for you. A dense, compact ball of pure color, this shrub has three seasons of interest and will add a unique accent to any garden plan. The bright yellow foliage withstands full sun exposure beautifully, with no signs of scorching from early spring through summer. When fall arrives, the small round foliage turns a delicious shade of saffron orange.
The completely rounded shape of the Mini Saffron Barberry makes an interesting contrast to other shrubs in the garden and requires virtually no pruning. Place Mini Saffron at the front of a mixed border for edging or dot it around for a spicy accent. Barberries have thorns, making them unappealing to deer. Drought and salt resistance are also high for Mini Saffron.
Sunjoy® Mini Saffron Barberry Care
Grow Mini Saffron in a location that receives full sun for at least 6 hours daily. Soil that drains well year-round is a must, as Barberry can suffer from root rot. Average soil and a neutral pH work well. Water newly planted Barberry shrubs 2-3 times a week to establish a root system that is drought tolerant. After Mini Saffron is established, supplemental watering may only be needed during excessively hot or dry weather. Fertilize this shrub lightly early in the spring with a granular, slow-release feed. A balanced, all-purpose fertilizer is perfect.
Annual pruning is rarely needed to maintain a compact ball shape; only a light cutting back of any winter-damaged stems is necessary. Grow Mini Saffron Barberry in a container that has excellent drainage, and use an all-purpose potting mix. Fertilize the containers monthly through the growing season to replace nutrients leached out of the soil from watering. A liquid seaweed or fish emulsion will keep the foliage bright and healthy. Water the pots when the top 2-3 inches of potting soil are dry.
Sunjoy® Mini Saffron Barberry Spacing
Mini Saffron Barberry has a mature height of 2 feet and a spread of 30 inches. Plant each shrub to allow good air circulation and room for viewing the attractive shape. Space each plant 3 feet apart on the center. Container-grown Mini Saffron requires a pot with at least a 16-inch diameter.
Restricted States: IN, MA, ME, NH, NY and VT.
