What a TKO (total knockout) this color variation of Superbells is! Deep purple with a dark purple, almost black throat and a bright yellow center, larger than usual blooms at about 1 ½ inches across. The flowers completely blanket the foliage with luscious blooms, creating an outstanding display all of its own! Or pair this with a complementary colored plant variety and a contrasting color variety to really amp this up and create an incredibly beautiful presentation.
Calibrachoas are native to South America where they grow as semi woody shrubs in the open grassland areas. They are perennial in Zones 9a through 11b and are grown as wildly popular annual container plants in Zones 3-8 with great success. They are extremely sensitive to soggy soil so most gardeners opt to grow them in containers rather than in the ground, but with proper planning, these do make incredible landscape plants as well.
Superbells® Grape Punch Calibrachoa Care
It cannot be emphasized enough how important it is that the soil where these are planted be well draining. Calibrachoa will not tolerate soggy soil. Water weekly in dry weather and plant them in full sun. They tolerate heat and humidity, but also thrive in more temperate locations equally as well. Fertilize with a slow release fertilizer to start with, and add a water soluble fertilizer to your waterings once a month or so for lush green growth and vigorous flowering. Calibrachoa are sensitive to soil pH changes, preferring 5.5 to 5.8 pH, so use of a liquid chelated iron spray on the foliage will correct any yellowing that occurs because of this.
Deadheading is not required as spent blooms drop off on their own. Pinch back newly established plants to encourage branching. Calibrachoas grow rapidly during the warm summer months so if you feel the need to prune back errant growth, or shear it if it opens up and becomes leggy, do so with a pair of sharp shears, cutting back about ⅓ of the volume of the plant. It will respond with renewed branching and flowering well into fall.
Superbells® Grape Punch Calibrachoa Spacing
This low growing, mounding annual appreciates some space. Topping out at about 12 inches tall and spreading out to 24 inches wide, give it 8 to 12 inches of space between plants. It is also a trailing plant, cascading down about 24 inches over your container or rock wall and looks wonderful when paired with petunias, lantana, coleus, euphorbia and ipomoea. You will love the compliments you receive from your friends so place this plant where it can be fully appreciated.
