- Best selling red flowering annual!
- Growing Zones 9 - 11
What a gorgeous red this ‘Million Bells’ relative of petunia offers! And to top it off, there are so many blossoms that you can hardly see the bright green foliage below it. This bright full sun to part shade annual has so much going for it, it's not hard to see why it has quickly become a best seller in its category. Where will you be placing this bright cherry red rebloomer in your garden?
Native to South America where it grows in the grasslands and scrub, calibrachoa are a relative of the nightshade family. By now the shape of the flower should have reminded you of a petunia which belongs in the same family. Perennial in Zones 9a through 11b, zones 2-8 grow it as an annual. And once you have given it what it needs, it will keep giving back to you from spring until fall. Although it can be planted in your landscape, calibrachoa is easiest to maintain in a hanging basket or container.
Superbells® Red Calibrachoa Care
Calibrachoa like full sun, with a little bit of filtered shade in the hotter climates, and well draining soil. Like, really well draining soil. It will not tolerate wet feet at all. Soil pH is typical of most annuals at the mildly acidic range of 5.5 to 5.8. You will want to fertilize early and on a regular basis to help maintain peak bloom and foliage health. Use a slow release organic fertilizer followed by a water soluble fertilizer periodically, all the while keeping an eye on the foliage for signs of lack of nutrients.
Deadheading is not necessary but a good shearing after planting will encourage the plant to put out more branches and therefore more blossoms. A periodic pruning throughout the long bloom season is also recommended, especially if it becomes leggy and lank and loses its wonderful mounding habit. Cut it back to ½ the branches length and fertilize if you haven’t already and it will rebound and begin blooming shortly after with renewed vigor.
Superbells® Red Calibrachoa Spacing
As important as watering and applying fertilizer is at the right time, giving this plant the proper spacing is also crucial to the health and performance of this continuous reblooming annual. Growing just 12 inches tall and spreading out 24 inches, it will require 8 to 12 inches of space between plants for optimal growth and for the health of the plant. Foliar diseases and insect pests can become a problem when air circulation is not allowed for.
