Supertunia® Persimmon Petunia will add a jolt of long-lasting color to any container or hanging basket. The juicy, two-toned flowers are versatile enough to be paired with hot-colored flowers or pastels to make stunning combinations. Supertunia® is the ultimate low-maintenance container plant that requires no deadheading to continue blooming from late spring to the first frost in fall. The natural mounding and slight spreading habit of Supertunia® make this plant a must-have as a filler or a spiller in mixed seasonal arrangements.

Although Petunias are considered tender perennials in USDA zones 10-11, gardeners often treat this as an annual plant, using it in a hanging basket or container, or as an easy, temporary groundcover in a garden bed. The delicate-looking flowers of Supertunias® are sturdy and able to withstand heat, humidity, and heavy rains with little extra care. The large, slightly fragrant flowers attract beneficial pollinators and hummingbirds to your garden.

Supertunia® Persimmon Petunia Care

Petunias require plenty of sun to bloom vigorously throughout the growing season.  Shade early in the morning or late in the afternoon is acceptable and will help plants growing in sweltering climates recover before nighttime. Container-grown plants are best planted in an all-purpose potting mix with added coir or perlite to enhance drainage and keep the hanging basket or pot lightweight. Petunias planted in the ground grow well in average garden soil mulched with organic compost. Watering of container-grown Petunias may need to be done daily or more often during hot or dry weather. Try to concentrate the water on the soil and root area and keep the foliage and flowers dry. Fertilize container-growing Petunias once every two weeks with a diluted liquid feed formulated for heavy-blooming plants. Look for products high in phosphorous (P) and potassium (K) to support blooming and root formation. Deadheading of Supertunias® is unnecessary, although a light trim may be needed later in the season to keep the plant in scale with other plants in a mixed seasonal planter.

Supertunias® can be grown indoors as a houseplant over the winter with the right growing conditions. Grow lights and extra humidity are a must. A better way to overwinter Persimmon Supertunia® would be to encourage the plant to go into a state of semi-dormancy. Cut the plant back to within 4-6 inches of the pot rim and place the container in a dark spot that will remain above 45-50 degrees F throughout the winter. A frost-free garage or greenhouse is perfect, although a dark corner in the basement works fine too. Keep the pots on the dry side and only water once a month or less. When the weather warms in late spring, bring the containers to a sunny location and water them when the first new green shoots emerge.

Supertunia® Persimmon Petunia Spacing

The mounding and spreading habit of Supertunias makes them great fillers and spillers for containers. At maturity, plants can reach 12 inches high and 2 feet wide with proper watering and feeding. Space plants 18 inches apart on the center for a quick, dense groundcover in a garden bed. Container-grown plants can be spaced closer together. Three Supertunia plants are enough to fill a 12-inch hanging basket.
