The Thoweil Hinoki Cypress or Chamaecyparis obtusa is an evergreen shrub. The horizontal branches of this cypress gently arch and feature frond-like foliage in a medium-green hue. This coniferous plant provides dependable color and introduces texture to a landscape.

The Chamaecyparis obtusa is an adaptable and versatile shrub that naturally fits in a rock garden, where the greenery and arching branches provide warmth against the harsh lines of the hardscape. Use the dense form of the Thoweil Hinoki cypress to create a privacy screen along an outdoor space or conceal a foundation wall or fence. The stunning form allows this shrub to shine as a specimen in the landscape or in a container for flexible placement options. Grow the Thoweil Hinoki Cypress in zones 5 through 8.

Thoweil Hinoki Cypress Care

Thoweil Hinoki Cypress needs full to partial sun. It prefers acidic, moist, and well-drained soil. New plants need water weekly, while established plants only need water during a prolonged dry period. New trees and plants grown in non-acidic soil will benefit from application of an acidic fertilizer. Established trees are not heavy feeders, but advanced gardeners may want to test the soil to determine if fertilization is necessary.

Prune the Thoweil Hinoki Cypress to maintain its shape as necessary during the summer. Trim overgrown branches or branches that look out of place to create a more pleasing form.

Thoweil Hinoki Cypress Spacing

Mature Thoweil Hinoki Cypress shrubs reach 3 to 4 feet tall and 1 to 2 feet wide. Create a hedge by planting shrubs 1 to 2 feet apart, or feature one shrub in a 12-inch wide container.
