Tricolor sedum adds multi-colored interest to brighten those tough-to-plant areas in full to part sun. This sedum is very cold hardy and makes a great ground cover to smother annual weeds after it is well established. The small, rounded leaves display brilliant colors of green ringed in white and reddish pink. Pink flowers cover this plant early in the summer and it remains evergreen in zone 6 and above.
Tricolor sedum is extremely deer and rabbit resistant and makes a densely matted ground cover that will withstand light foot traffic. Sedum is very versatile and can be grown in both a garden border and a container for a deck or patio. Allowing sedum to creep over the edge of a pot or rock wall helps to soften hard edges and give the garden a mature look. Tricolor sedum can be used as a filler or spiller for most containers and looks great in hanging baskets. This sedum is very tolerant of windy or salty coastal conditions and is the perfect addition to a rock or succulent garden border.
Tricolor Sedum Care
Sedum may be the most low-maintenance landscape plant. It requires little watering after it is fully established and rarely will need fertilizing to remain vigorous with vibrant colors. Choose a planting location with full sun for best performance. Free-draining soil is important to keep the roots healthy. Heavy clay soils will need to be amended with grit or organic compost before planting.
Deadheading is not required for tricolor sedum as it is a low-maintenance, self-cleaning plant. Pruning is also not necessary. Allow the plants to spread, only cutting the plants back if they grow out of the desired area. Any clippings can be replanted in the garden bed or a pot and will quickly grow roots. Although tricolor sedum is considered an evergreen perennial, it will die back in the colder hardiness zones for winter. In the spring, new shoots will emerge in tiny rosettes from the rooted stems.
Tricolor Sedum Spacing
This sedum reaches only 3-6 inches high but quickly spreads to 24 inches, making tricolor sedum an ideal ground cover. Space plants 24 inches apart when creating a mass planting. Spacing is not an issue when growing tricolor sedum in a hanging basket or other container. Three plants will effectively fill a 12-inch diameter pot.
