Astilbe chinensis is a must-have addition to any shade garden. 'Vision in Red' Chinese Astilbe has color, beauty, and style all rolled into one. Beautiful plumes of red with shades of pink are sure to brighten up even the darkest understory canopy. Dark green fern-like foliage fits in perfectly around a scenic woodland edge.
Bees will enjoy this flower as much as you do. Not to fear deer and rabbits will steer clear. This is a long lived perennial that makes a remarkable display all summer long. Its wispy bushing plumes sway in the shade, and it is exceptionally breathtaking when used in large drifts. Illuminate shady patios with thrilling cotton candy tufts.
Vision in Red Astilbe Care
Astilbes are easy as long as growing conditions are right. Morning sun is preferred, but astilbes can take a wide range of sunny to full shade conditions. Woodland edges typically provide the perfect location, containing rich organic slightly acidic soil. Ensure the soil is well-draining and stays consistently moist. Add 1 to 2 inches of compost around its rootzone annually.
Expect this perennial to be in your garden for a long time. Astilbe survives in a wide variety of zones from 4 to 9. Maintenance is minimal. Watch for signs of browning leaf margins which may indicate dry soil. Once blooms are spent feel free to trim off the flower stalks. The foliage dies back in the winter and reemerges in the Spring.
Vision in Red Astilbe Spacing
Chinese Astilbes gives a stunning contrast when paired with shade garden favorites like hostas, Brunnera, or Hellebores. Every 3 to 4 years, divide its crown to invigorate compacted growth. We recommend spacing plants out every 15-inch for maximum enjoyment.
