The delicate yellow petals of the Wedding Party® First Dance Lenten Rose have maroon accents along the edges and backs, giving this stunner added dimension and visual interest. The double flowers of this Helleborus hybrid are 2 to 2.5 inches across and bloom in early to mid-spring. This upright filler boasts glossy green foliage with serrated edges, and even after the flowers fade away, the foliage continues to look amazing and provide greenery through the fall.
Lenten Rose is a slow grower, but that’s not an issue because this plant gets an early start emerging during the spring. Feature this plant in mass plantings, borders, or containers, or trim the abundant blooms to use as cut flowers. Helleborus is deer and rabbit resistant, so you can rest assured the plants will not likely fall victim to hungry foragers. Grow this beautiful Lenten Rose as a perennial in USDA zones 4 through 9.
Wedding Party® First Dance Lenten Rose Plant Care
Lenten Rose is an easy plant to maintain because it is not very fussy. The main requirement is light, or rather lack of it. Helleborus needs partial to full shade. This plant can take on somewhat higher light levels during the spring until nearby plants fill in and create shade. Use soil high in organic content that is neutral or slightly alkaline. Soil should also be well-draining because this plant does not like soggy conditions. Water when the top few inches of soil dry out, but established plants are drought tolerant.
Top dress the soil with organic compost or manure or apply a balanced fertilizer throughout the growing season. Helleborus is not a heavy feeder if grown in rich soil. The delicate foliage is prone to wind damage, so remove damage as needed, but try to locate the plant in a protected area near buildings, trees, or tall plants that can provide shelter.
Wedding Party® First Dance Lenten Rose Spacing
As a medium-height plant, the Wedding Party® First Dance Lenten Rose will grow 18 to 24 inches tall and wide. Plants can be spread 18 to 24 inches from the center to the neighboring plant to create a continuous planting.
