With its big 3-inch grayish-purple flowers, Wedding Party Nights Lenten Rose (Helleborus hybrid) can headline any garden bed or container. Each big flower has a yellow center, for a stunning contrast. The perennial produces the earthy, almost wine-colored blooms in shade, a nice feature in an evergreen plant. It thrives in most soils and in zones 4 through 9. The perennial reaches nearly 2 feet high and around each growing season.
Wedding Party Vegas Nights might be one of the earliest bloomers in the landscape each season, with flowers appearing by early to mid-spring. Use it as a border plant around a garden bed or entryway to enjoy its green leaves all year and early blooms as winter fades. Or fill a container with the flowers as a companion to a fern, hosta, or other shade-loving perennial. The flowers attract bees and the plant is deer and rabbit resistant.
Wedding Party® Vegas Nights Lenten Rose Care
Shade is key for the stunning Lenten Rose. It grows best in full or part shade, and needs adequate afternoon shade in hotter growing regions. Most soils are fine, but hellebores can benefit from added organic matter as mulch or soil enrichment. Organic matter helps provide nutrients and helps soil drain well, another important aspect of growing hellebores. Mulch also helps keep roots cool and water from evaporating too quickly. Give your plant average water. If the soil looks or feels soggy, skip watering, and if it is dried out for a short time, your plant should be fine. It is drought tolerant to a point, but not in high heat or for extended periods.
One application of a granular, balanced fertilizer at planting or trimming time in spring helps the Lenten Rose to flower. Hellebores need very little pruning or other care. As new growth appears in late winter or early spring, you can carefully cut through old or damaged stems to make way for new growth. You can deadhead, or remove stems of faded flowers, after they bloom in spring. There is no need to prune regularly or shape the perennial.
Wedding Party® Vegas Nights Lenten Rose Spacing
Space several Lenten Roses about 18 to 24 inches apart in groupings like borders or mass plantings. Measure the spacing from the center of each plant.
