Tall flower spikes that emerge during the spring and summer are the hallmark of Lupine. This cultivar, the WESTCOUNTRY™ Rachel de Thame Lupine, is a Lupinus polyphyllus and boasts sturdy stems that support striking pink and white flowers. The showy flower spikes emerge from a Lance-shaped, glossy green foliage bed. This plant is a fast-grower that adds height and bold color to plantings.
Use these plants in borders, landscapes, mass plantings, or as a focal point. The tall flower spikes make lovely cut flowers. The beautiful blooms are also a draw for pollinators like butterflies and bees. The WESTCOUNTRY™ Rachel de Thame Lupine is a perennial in USDA zones 5 through 8.
WESTCOUNTRY™ Rachel de Thame Lupine Plant Care
Plant this Lupine in partial to full sun. This beauty needs at least 4 to 6 hours of sunlight but expect better results with more light. Lupinus polyphyllus prefers consistently damp soil, so water when the soil still feels slightly moist. While this plant has high water needs, too much water can be damaging, so use well-draining soil to avoid soggy conditions. The soil should be rich and neutral to slightly acidic to support more growth.
Deadhead the Lupine to direct more energy into the plant and hopefully extend the bloom cycle. Lupines are not heavy feeders, especially when planted in rich soil. You can feed the plant monthly using balanced, water-soluble plant food.
WESTCOUNTRY™ Rachel de Thame Lupine Plant Spacing
This variety will grow 24 to 36 inches tall and cover 18 to 24 inches across. Place plants 18 to 24 inches apart when creating a mass planting or border. Give the plants more room when placed near trees or buildings.
