When looking for some old-time charm, there is nothing more classic than a white climbing rose like White Dawn (Rosa ‘White Dawn’). Quickly reaching 10-12 feet long and wide, White Dawn is perfect for climbing up an arbor or trellis, cascading along a fence, or creating a supported hedge. It features dense, dark green leaves and beautiful, contrasting ivory blooms. The gardenia scent of this rose will fill your yard continuously from late spring through late fall.
Disease resistance is a must when looking for the perfect rose bush, and White Dawn does not disappoint. With regular maintenance and good cultural practices, White Dawn will continue to grow and bloom for years, making a statement in your garden. While White Dawn can be grown as a large shrub, it does best when provided sturdy support. Like many other roses, White Dawn demonstrates excellent heat tolerance and is suitable for hot, humid, sunny spots.
White Dawn Climbing Rose Care
The White Dawn Climbing Rose will grow best in a full sun spot in well-draining, normal-to-loamy soil. Climbing roses do best when watered deeply about once a week in temperate weather. In hotter, drier conditions, you may need to water this rose more frequently. Avoid wetting the leaves to reduce the risk of foliar infections. To plant White Dawn, dig a hole that is at least twice the width and as deep as the root ball. Tie the bush to a sturdy horizontal structure to assist in upward growth, and provide an arbor, trellis, or other structure for it to climb.
Pruning to remove dead growth and improve air flow is vital for growing healthy roses. Once White Dawn has begun growing in the spring, prune any dead or damaged branches and train new and old climbing branches on a support. Remove spent flowers and rosehips to encourage repeat blooming. For best flowering and growth, apply compost or a bloom-boosting fertilizer in the spring. Apply a thick layer of mulch around the base of the plant in late fall to aid in root protection through the winter.
White Dawn Climbing Rose Spacing
Plant the White Dawn Climbing Rose in a spot where it has plenty of room to grow and spread, at least 10 feet away from other plants. Due to its size and extensive root system, planting White Dawn in a container is not recommended.
