Everything about You and Me Forever® Astilbe is charming. The botanical name is Astilbe chinensis, and this plant boasts some of the most unique flowers that bloom from spring through summer. Pyramidal flower plumes have a fuzzy texture, adding to the whimsy of this plant. The stems are densely packed with tiny, deep red flowers that open in succession, starting at the bottom and working their way up. The charming flowers are anchored by a mound of dark green foliage with finely serrated edges.

This clump-forming perennial plant adds vibrant color and height to a border or bed. Plant it near the middle or back of a mixed bed so the bold flower plumes will stand above other plants, or group several astilbes for a larger impact. Trim the flowers to display in a vase and dry them for continued use. Astilbe works well in a woodland or cottage-themed garden. The flowers support pollinators, making this plant a good pick for a butterfly garden. Deer tend to leave astilbe alone for worry-free growing in rural and wooded areas. You and Me Forever® Astilbe Care

Plant in full to part sun so the red flowers can brighten up a dark area. Morning sun and afternoon shade are ideal in warm climates. Provide rich, moist, well-drained soil. New plants need damp but not soggy conditions. Established plants are drought tolerant, but appreciate water during a dry period to support continued growth. Apply a layer of mulch to retain moisture. Use a slow-release fertilizer in the spring.

The faded flower stalks continue to provide color and texture, so deadheading isn’t necessary. Trim all growth to ground level after the first frost. Astilbe can overwhelm a space, so divide the plants every few years in fall or early spring.

You and Me Forever® Astilbe grows 18 to 24 inches tall and 18 inches wide. Astilbe chinensis spreads quickly, so space plants 18 to 24 inches apart. The clumps will fill in empty areas before long.
