The Alachua Muscadine Grape Vine, or Vitis rotundafolia, is a versatile and delicious fast-growing variety. In the spring, leaves in various shades of green emerge, followed by greenish-white blooms. This cultivar ripens roughly two weeks earlier than other Muscadine varieties. The medium-sized oval fruit has a dark black hue. Alachua Muscadine Grape Vine grapes are excellent for eating, juicing, preserves, and wine.

This variety is self-fertile, but planting several together will increase cross-pollination and yield. The Alachua Muscadine Grape Vine is hardy in zones 7 through 10. Remove crossed branches in late winter to encourage growth and improve air circulation. This cultivar is mostly disease resistant and holds up nicely in drought, mildew, and heat.

Alachua Muscadine Grape Vine Care

Plant in late winter or early spring in a spot that receives full sun. At least 6 hours of sunlight is needed for these vines to grow, thrive, and set fruit. Space Alachua Muscadine Grape Vines 12 to 15 feet apart in well-drained soil that is rich and moist.

Growing Alachua Muscadine Grape Vine

Mature plants stand 10 to 15 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide. Expect the vine to bear fruit in the second or third growing season.

Grapes grow well in containers. Select a pot with drainage that is several inches larger than the root ball. Water when the top few inches of potting soil are dry.

Watering Alachua Muscadine Grape Vine

Soak the soil when planting. Water to keep the root ball damp, but not soggy. Do not water dormant plants.

Feeding Alachua Muscadine Grape Vine

Fertilize new grape vines two weeks after planting and again in early spring. Use a balanced fertilizer. Fertilizer benefits grape vines in the first two years, but these plants are not heavy feeders, and feeding is not necessary beyond the first two years.
