Rhododendron ‘Amagasa’ is an extremely floriferous shrub with eye-catching spring color! Its clusters of classic azalea flowers are bright coral with deeper orange flecks. Growing just 3-4 feet tall and wide, Amagasa Azalea is ideal for small gardens. Its upright growth habit and shiny, evergreen leaves add structural, year-round interest.
Amagasa Azalea is a slow-growing and long-lived shrub. It makes a stunning specimen plant due to its vibrant flowers and glossy leaves. This shrub lends itself well to mixed borders and foundation plantings, creating an attractive backdrop to shorter perennials. It is compact enough to grow in front of taller trees and shrubs in a layered planting. Amagasa Azalea also looks marvelous when grown in mass plantings or as a low-growing hedge.
Amagasa Azalea Care
Plant Amagasa Azalea in moist, well-drained soil. Amagasa Azalea needs acidic soil to prevent chlorosis—the yellowing of leaves—caused by nutrient deficiencies. If your soil is too alkaline, amend it with acidifying products such as aluminum sulfate. Incorporating compost into the soil will also help this shrub thrive. In spring, fertilize your azalea with a slow-release fertilizer formulated for acidic-loving plants. Keep Amagasa Azalea consistently watered during its first year after planting. Mulching will help retain soil moisture and insulate the roots through winter. Amagasa Azalea can be grown in full sun to partial shade, and appreciates afternoon shade in hot climates.
As a low-maintenance plant, Amagasa Azalea will not need routine pruning. However, overlapping and dead branches can be removed to increase air circulation. Azaleas can also be pruned to about a foot from the ground for height control. Prune after the flowers have faded in spring to ensure you do not accidentally snip off any developing flower buds.
Amagasa Azalea Spacing
Amagasa Azalea can be spaced 4-6 feet apart. If using this shrub for mass plantings, a spacing of about 4 feet apart works best for a fuller look.
