Growing Zones
Angel Bells Clustered Bellflowers (Campanula glomerata ‘Angel Bells’) showcase large clusters of white, bell-shaped blooms that brighten the garden in late spring and early summer. They form a dense mound of dark green foliage, rising to about 14 to 18 inches tall and spreading 16 to 20 inches wide. These long-blooming perennials stand out with their dramatic floral display, making them a top choice for borders, containers, or mass plantings.
The charming bell-shaped flowers attract hummingbirds and bees while remaining unpalatable to deer. Native to Europe, this cluster bellflower prefers moist, well-drained soil but adapts to different pH levels, from acidic to alkaline. Plant it in full sun or part shade, especially in regions with hotter summers, where a bit of afternoon shade can help the flowers last longer. Angel Bells also works nicely as a cut flower, allowing you to enjoy the elegant blooms indoors.
Angel Bells Clustered Bellflowers Care
Choose a site with moderately fertile, well-drained soil, adding compost or organic matter if needed. Water regularly during the growing season, ensuring the soil stays slightly moist but never waterlogged. A balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring can support healthy growth, though these plants typically do well with average nutrients. Position them to receive at least four hours of direct sunlight per day, preferably in areas that offer some afternoon shade in warmer climates.
Cut back the flowering stems after they have finished blooming to maintain a tidy appearance and potentially encourage a lighter second flush. Some gardeners also thin out or pinch lanky growth to keep the clump more compact. If grown in containers, check moisture levels more frequently to prevent drying out. In colder regions, layer mulch around the base to protect roots and crowns during winter.
Angel Bells Clustered Bellflowers Spacing
Allow 16 to 20 inches between plants for mass plantings or border designs, giving each clump adequate room to expand. When growing in containers or as a single specimen, use a pot at least 10 to 12 inches in diameter to accommodate the root system.
