Arctic White Sempervivum is a unique succulent for dry soils and containers! This plant produces green, fleshy leaves arranged in a tightly packed rosette. Each rosette is coated in white webbing, giving these succulents a snowball-like appearance. This low-growing perennial produces multiple offshoots in clusters around the main rosette. In summer, plants may produce attractive stalks of salmon-pink flowers held above the rosettes.
Arctic White Sempervivum is low maintenance, drought tolerant, and resistant to pests. It makes an excellent ground cover in tough areas to plant, including in tight spaces between rocks. Grow this succulent in rock gardens and along pathways. Arctic White Sempervivum is also ideal for container gardens, where it can grow with other succulents.
Arctic White Hens & Chicks Care
Arctic White Sempervivum is best planted in full sun, although it can tolerate partial sun. It must be grown in well-drained soil and is a good candidate for sandy or rocky soils. As succulents, hens and chicks do not need to be watered or fertilized often. They will thrive in nutrient-poor soils where little else tends to grow. If growing Arctic White hens and chicks in a container, use a potting mix that is formulated for succulents.
Hens and chicks are monocarpic, meaning that the ‘hen’ will die after flowering. However, there is no need to worry – the offsets will continue to live and multiply after the mother plant has finished flowering. Remove spent flowers and faded hens. Hens and chicks are shallow-rooted and can be easily divided. They are also easily propagated by breaking or cutting an offset from its stem beneath the rosette of leaves and replanting it in well-drained soil.
Arctic White Hens & Chicks Spacing
Plant Arctic White hens and chicks 6-8’’ apart so it has space to spread. For containers, choose a shallow pot that is a few inches wider than the diameter of the rosette to allow plenty of room for offsets to grow.
