Tip: match plant habit to the role for the best designs.
Art & Sol™ Purple People Eater Mangave delivers the closest thing to a purple succulent you can use as a bold centerpiece in full sun, with color that intensifies the brighter the site gets. This mangave forms a stout rosette 12–16 inches tall and 16–24 inches wide, with thick blue-green leaves freckled in reddish-purple so heavily the plant takes on a violet cast at a glance. Upturned leaf margins expose a line of warm-toned spines in yellow, orange, and cinnamon brown, plus a cinnamon tip at each leaf end. When our staff needs one plant to anchor a summer container with zero flowers required, this is a go-to.
Purple People Eater is built for heat, handles drought well once established, and usually shrugs off deer and rabbits. Its agave-manfreda hybrid background also makes it more flexible with watering than many succulents, provided the roots never stay waterlogged. Use it as a thriller in patio pots, as a focal plant in gravel beds, or as a repeating accent in a modern landscape where strong form matters. In zones 9–11 it can stay outdoors year-round; elsewhere, treat it as a warm-season feature and bring it inside before frost. Even indoors, it keeps its sculptural shape with bright light.
Art & Sol™ Purple People Eater Mangave Care
Plant Art & Sol™ Purple People Eater Mangave in full sun to maximize purple coloration and maintain a tight rosette. Choose a fast-draining soil or potting mix and aim for a pH range of 6.0–8.0, which this plant tolerates well. Set the plant so the rosette sits slightly above the soil surface and keep soil out of the leaf cup. Water thoroughly, then wait until the soil is dry several inches down before watering again; in peak summer growth, that may be weekly in containers and less often in the ground. Feed lightly during the warm months with a half-strength fertilizer once a month to support steady growth without forcing softness.
This plant doesn’t need pruning, but it does benefit from occasional cleanup of older lower leaves. In colder climates, move containers indoors ahead of freezing weather and keep the plant on the dry side through winter.
Art & Sol™ Purple People Eater Mangave Spacing
Space plants 16–24 inches apart so each rosette can expand without crowding. For containers, use a 14–16 inch pot for one plant, or step up to a wider bowl if you want to add companions. Pair it with a colorful euphorbia, ice plant, and feather reed grass for a mix of contrasting form and texture that thrives in sun and prefers similar low-water care.
