Tip: match plant habit to the role for the best designs.
Art & Sol™ Silver Fox Mangave is the quickest way to get a true silver “glow” in full sun without babying a fussy succulent. ‘Silver Fox’ stays a compact 8–10 inches tall and spreads 16–18 inches wide, forming a bold rosette of thick, arching leaves coated in a heavy waxy film that turns silvery green in bright light. Subtle blue-purple spotting hides underneath, adding depth when you’re close. The defined marginal teeth give it a crisp, sculptural edge that looks high-end in modern pots. In our experience, this is the plant that makes customers stop at the bench and ask, “What is that?”
This mangave is bred to handle heat and drought, and it’s more forgiving with summer watering than many succulents as long as drainage is sharp. Use it as a container centerpiece, a focal plant in gravel gardens, or a repeating accent in sunny beds where you want strong form all season. It holds its color best in full sun and stays evergreen in warm zones (9–11). In colder regions, it’s a prime candidate for overwintering indoors as a bright-window houseplant.
Art & Sol™ Silver Fox Mangave Care
Place Art & Sol™ Silver Fox Mangave in full sun to bring out the brightest silver coating and the tightest form. Use a fast-draining mix or sandy, gritty garden soil, and aim for a pH anywhere from mildly acidic through neutral to slightly alkaline (about 6.0–8.0). When planting, keep the crown slightly above the surrounding soil line so water doesn’t sit in the rosette. Water deeply only after the pot or bed has dried well, then let it drain completely; this plant will tolerate a bit more moisture than typical succulents, but it won’t tolerate staying wet. Feed lightly during active growth with a half-strength fertilizer once a month to maintain steady, compact growth.
Maintenance is simple: remove any damaged lower leaves and keep mulch away from the crown. Typically it does not require special protection from rabbits and deer. In zones below 9, move containers indoors before hard freezes and keep them much drier through winter.
Art & Sol™ Silver Fox Mangave Spacing
Space plants 16–18 inches apart so each rosette can show off its full shape without crowding. For containers, choose a pot just slightly wider than the rosette—about 12–14 inches for a single plant—with a drainage hole. For companions, try pairing it with blue fescue (Festuca glauca), stonecrop (Sedum), and lantana (Lantana camara) for a sun-loving mix that highlights the silver foliage and stays compatible with low-water care.
