Baby Blue Eyes Spruce delivers dazzling, silvery blue-green color in a compact package that fits today’s smaller landscapes. Picea pungens 'Baby Blue Eyes' forms a dense, pyramidal tree with silvery blue-green needles that stay attractive all year. It grows slowly, typically maturing around 15 to 30 feet tall and 10 to 15 feet wide, depending on climate and care. Our designers use it when a landscape needs winter color, structure, and a cleaner scale than a full-sized Colorado spruce.
This semi-dwarf Colorado spruce selection was discovered as a chance seedling in Oregon and is prized for its compact growth and strong needle color. The species is native to the central Rocky Mountains, so this tree performs best in cool-summer regions with good sun and steady drainage. Its tight branching works well as a specimen, corner anchor, small screen, or holiday-style evergreen near an entry. Deer and rabbits usually leave the prickly needles alone, which helps young trees settle in with fewer setbacks.
Baby Blue Eyes Spruce Care
Plant Baby Blue Eyes Spruce in full sun for the bluest color and densest branching, though it can tolerate partial shade. It grows best in well-drained, slightly acidic soil, especially loam or amended sandy soil with consistent moisture. Avoid soggy clay and hot, humid sites where spruce trees are more likely to struggle.
Water regularly during the first growing season, soaking when the top 2 inches of soil feel dry. Once established, water deeply but less often, giving extra attention during long dry spells or reflected summer heat. Apply a general-purpose evergreen fertilizer in early spring, and expect growth to pause through winter while the needles remain evergreen.
Pruning is usually limited to removing dead, broken, or wayward branches in early spring. Light trimming of new growth can help tighten the shape, but do not cut back into old bare wood. Protect young plants from deer browsing in high-pressure areas until the tree gains size and tougher branching.
Baby Blue Eyes Spruce Spacing
Space Baby Blue Eyes Spruce 10 to 15 feet from other large shrubs or trees, and at least 15 feet from buildings so the lower branches can develop naturally. For screening, plant 8 to 10 feet apart if you want the trees to meet over time. Use a large 25-gallon or larger container only while the tree is young and plan to move the tree to the ground within a few years. Great companions in a sunny, well-drained site include ninebark, spirea, lavender, and sedum, providing a long bloom display and low-water needs.
