Feature
Compact, forgiving, and visually striking, Baby Jade Plant delivers the classic look of Crassula ovata in a tidy, desk‑friendly package only 12 inches tall. Round, glossy leaves store water for drought defense and blush ruby along the margins when they bask in strong light. With age the succulent develops a stout, bonsai‑like trunk and can reward growers with starry white blooms in late fall. Also sold as Baby Jade, Miniature Jade, or Dwarf Jade Tree, this South African native is prized for its ability to live for decades with minimal care. Whether you’re after an easy starter succulent or a sculptural accent for a sunny shelf, Baby Jade checks every box.
Best Locations for Growing Baby Jade Plant
Place it where you relax and recharge: a bright kitchen sill, south‑facing home office, sunny living‑room console, or a child’s window desk where responsibility is shared. The plant is considered mildly toxic to pets that chew foliage, so elevate pots if curious cats or dogs roam. Outdoors in frost‑free zones 9‑11, Baby Jade thrives on patios, rock gardens, and coastal beds.
Baby Jade Plant Sunlight Requirements
Bright, direct light for 4–6 hours daily produces tight growth and red leaf edges. Indoors, set the pot within 12 inches of a south or west window; an east window works if morning sun is unobstructed. In hot inland summers shift the pot a foot back or draw a sheer curtain at midday to prevent leaf scorch. Under LEDs supply 12 hours of full‑spectrum light.
Baby Jade Plant Care
Use a clay or plastic container with drainage and fill it with porous cactus mix amended with extra pumice or perlite. Rootbound plants bloom more readily, so repot only every three years or when the trunk lifts the root ball. Pinch soft tips in spring to keep a compact canopy or wire branches for bonsai effects. Outdoors, protect from frost below 30 °F.
Watering Baby Jade Plant
Soak thoroughly, then allow the mix to dry completely—usually every 2–3 weeks in active growth and monthly in winter. Leaves that feel soft or look wrinkled need water; leaves yellowing or falling signal excess moisture. Average household humidity is adequate.
Feeding Baby Jade Plant
From April through August feed once every six weeks with a half‑strength balanced succulent fertilizer (for example 2‑7‑7). Skip feeding in autumn and winter to prevent weak, leggy growth.
