Barbados Acerola Cherry Tree is a compact tropical fruiting shrub known for bright red, sweet-tart fruit with exceptional vitamin C content. Malpighia emarginata, often sold as Malpighia glabra, produces pink flowers followed by small cherry-like fruit that can ripen in just 3 to 4 weeks after bloom. This fast grower from the Caribbean and Central America matures about 10 to 12 feet tall and 10 to 15 feet wide outdoors, but it can be kept smaller in a patio container. In frost-free areas it can fruit more than once a season; in cooler zones it thrives in a container you can roll inside for winter protection.
Barbados Acerola Cherry Tree Care
Plant Barbados Acerola Cherry Tree in spring once nights are warm, spacing shrubs 10 to 15 feet apart in the ground. Position in full sun for the heaviest fruiting, though it can handle partial shade, and plant in well-drained sandy or loamy soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH around 6.0 to 7.0. Prune after harvest or in late fall to shape the shrub, remove dead wood, and keep the interior open.
Growing Barbados Acerola Cherry Tree
Barbados Acerola Cherry Tree can begin fruiting young, often once the plant is established and large enough to support bloom and fruit. It has no chill-hour requirement and grows outdoors in zones 9 to 11, with patio culture useful in colder regions. Give it steady warmth, room for its spreading branches, and indoor winter protection before temperatures fall near 40 degrees.
Growing Barbados Acerola Cherry Tree in Containers
Barbados Acerola Cherry Tree grows well in a 15- to 25-gallon container with drainage holes and a light, well-drained potting mix. Repot when roots fill the pot, or refresh the upper layer of mix each spring if the shrub is already in a large container. Grow this fruiting shrub as a single container specimen to avoid root competition. Landscape plantings work well near agastache or bee balm for extra pollinator activity.
Watering Barbados Acerola Cherry Tree
Water when the top 2 to 3 inches of soil feel dry, soaking the root zone well and then letting excess water drain away. Dry soil during bloom or fruiting can reduce the crop, while soggy soil may lead to root problems.
Feeding Barbados Acerola Cherry Tree
Feed in spring and summer with a balanced slow-release fertilizer, such as an 8-3-9 or similar fruiting shrub formula. Container-grown plants benefit from lighter, regular feeding during active growth, but stop feeding in low winter light so the plant rests cleanly.
