Feature
Turn heads with saturated, year-round color. Bauer’s Cordyline stacks narrow, sword-like leaves in a bold burgundy crown, adding instant architecture to beds and large patio planters. The upright, palm-like form reads modern without feeling cold.
Tough where it counts, it handles heat and dry spells once established while staying tidy with minimal grooming. Use one as a focal point, flank an entry with a matching pair, or drop into a container for fast tropical energy.
Bauer’s Cordyline Care
Give 6 or more hours of direct sun for richest foliage; in hot inland climates, afternoon shade keeps leaves pristine. Plant in well-drained soil (sandy or loamy) with a pH around 6.0–7.5; avoid heavy, waterlogged sites. Water regularly the first 2–3 months, then water when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry; containers dry faster in summer.
Feed in spring with a slow-release, balanced fertilizer or a palm/citrus formula; a light midsummer top-up supports color. Strip spent lower leaves and remove any flower stalks after bloom to maintain a clean trunk. Hardy outdoors in USDA zones 9–11; in colder zones, grow in containers and overwinter in a bright, frost-free spot. In windy areas, stake young plants their first season. Note: leaves may be harmful if ingested by pets.
Bauer’s Cordyline Spacing
For a specimen, allow a 4–6 foot diameter to showcase the 4–5 foot crown. Keep 3–4 feet from walls, fences, and paths for leaf clearance and airflow. For a dramatic grouping, plant 3–5 feet on center.
In containers, start with a 16–20 inch wide pot at least 14 inches deep with drainage; size up to 22–24 inches as roots expand. Place container plants where they receive full sun and good airflow; weigh pots or add gravel for stability in exposed sites.
