Feature
Cotyledon tomentosa is a succulent evergreen shrub, and part of the Crassulaceae family. It is native to South Africa. It features unique, fuzzy-green, oval leaves in the shape of bear paws with distinctive red ‘teeth’ at the end of each leaf. It is also known as Kitten Paw Plant and Woolly Cotyledon. In the spring, it produces lovely yellow, orange or red bell-shaped flowers. This is a unique plant that adds loads of visual interest and form to any space.
Best Locations For Growing Bear's Paw Succulent
Place your Bear Paw near a window that provides indirect bright light. Be mindful to put it in an area away from pets as it can be toxic to animals. It prefers dry air and doesn’t require additional humidity.
Bear Paw Succulent Sunlight Requirements
Bear Paw thrives in bright light with ample airflow. Place it near a south-facing window where it can receive at least 6 or more hours of indirect sunlight per day.
Bear's Paw Succulent Care
The plant is easy to care for, but its leaves are delicate, so handle it gently. Plant Bear Paw in well-draining potting soil in a pot with adequate drainage holes. You can use a potting mix formulated for succulents or cacti, or add coarse sand or perlite to your preferred potting mix. Propagation is easiest by taking cuttings. Take a 5” clipping and set it out to callus. Repot in a well-draining cactus or succulent mix and place it in bright indirect light.
Watering Bear's Paw Succulent
Allow the top 1-2” of soil to dry before watering. Be mindful not to overwater; a damp Bear Paw succulent may be susceptible to fungal diseases, so be sure to provide proper drainage holes and adequate airflow. Water the soil, not the succulent leaves.
Feeding Bear's Paw Succulent
During their spring and summer growing seasons, give Bear Paw a light feeding of a balanced, all-purpose, water-soluble succulent fertilizer.
