Tillandsia bergeri is often referred to as the ‘Mad Pupper’. Unlike most air plants, Bergeri will produce pup offsets regularly during its life. These new, small plants can be left attached to the mother plant or separated when they are half the size of the main plant. The medium green color remains vibrant throughout all seasons, especially when grown in indirect bright light. Bergeri makes an excellent addition to a terrarium or can be grown on its own as an accent plant in a bathroom or other humid area.
Best Locations For Growing Bergeri Air Plant
Bergeri grows the fastest and healthiest when provided with a consistently humid environment. A bathroom is a perfect location, although misting every 2-3 days will provide enough humidity in a typically dry house environment. Air plants are perfect as an accent in just about any setting inside your home.
Bergeri Air Plant Sunlight Requirements
Air plants require indirect, bright light. For best exposure, try placing Bergeri on a wall adjacent to a sunny window or across from a window that faces south or west. Air plants can grow outside in bright or dappled shade during the summer. A full sun position outdoors will result in burnt leaves.
Bergeri Air Plant Care
No pots or soil are required for Air Plants to grow successfully. They are epiphytic plants that get all of their nutrients and moisture through modified leaf structures. The roots only serve to attach the plant to porous structures.
Watering Bergeri Air Plant
Once a week, Bergeri Air Plant needs to be fully submerged in water for 10-20 minutes. Place the plant upside down on a towel to dry. Alternatively, misting the plant every 1-2 days will provide sufficient moisture and humidity. Do not use distilled water or softener-treated water. Collected rainwater is the best, followed by cool tap water left to sit for 24 hours to dissipate the chlorine.
Feeding Bergeri Air Plant
Air Plants can be fertilized once every 3-4 months if desired. Use a formulation for houseplants or a specialized Bromeliad fertilizer. Dissolve the fertilizer in water to replace one of the regular waterings. If using houseplant fertilizer, dilute it to ¼ of the recommended dosage. Bergeri Air Plant only blooms about once during its lifetime. This plant puts most of its energy into producing offsets. Fertilizing more than every 3 months will not produce more flowers.
