The popularity of Billietiae Philodendron has skyrocketed in recent years, making them one of the more difficult Philodendrons to find. The mass appeal is due to the elongated shield-shaped leaves with orange petioles and prominent veining, which stand out among tropical plants. The stems eventually climb and look great trained on a moss pole or trailing in a hanging basket. Easy to grow and to propagate from cuttings, Philodendron Billietiae makes a great focal point in any tropical plant collection. This Philodendron sends up greenish flower clusters anytime between July and October when grown with plenty of bright light.
Best Locations For Growing Billietiae Philodendron
Philodendrons appreciate medium to high humidity levels and thrive in humid rooms, like kitchens and bathrooms. Billietiae Philodendron can climb and trail, lending itself to hanging baskets or placement on a shelf where the stems can cascade down. Keep this vining plant out of reach of pets and children as the leaves and sap can be toxic and irritating on contact.
Billietiae Philodendron Sunlight Requirements
Bright indirect or filtered light in a south-facing window is perfect for Billietiae Philodendron. Lower light conditions can reduce the vivid coloring and number of leaves, and the stems may become elongated. East and west-facing windows are great locations as long as the plants are placed right in front of the window.
Billietiae Philodendron Care
Philodendrons thrive in rich soils with good drainage. Mix 2 parts of an all-purpose indoor potting mix with one part of fine orchid bark or perlite. A plastic pot will help the soil stay moist longer between waterings, but make sure it has excellent bottom drainage. Drain saucers or cache pots within 20-30 minutes of watering to prevent the roots from getting waterlogged. Humidity trays with wet pebbles or LECA balls under the pot are a great way to boost atmospheric humidity for the plant.
Watering Billietiae Philodendron
Water roughly once a week or when the top 1-2 inches of soil have dried completely. Reduce watering during the fall and winter to every 10-14 days or more if the plant lives in a very humid environment. The shorter days in winter signal the plant to slow its growth and take up less moisture.
Feeding Billietiae Philodendron
Diluted liquid fertilizers are best applied once a month during spring and summer when the plant is actively growing. Use a feed formulated for houseplants with a balanced NPK ratio. During the fall and winter, feeding should be stopped, as the plants do not require added nutrition during semi-dormancy.
