Feature
Philodendron brandtianum, also known as Brandi Philodendron, is highly sought after by both new and experienced plant collectors due to its large leaves adorned with striking silver variegation. This epiphytic plant belongs to the Araceae family, which includes houseplant stars such as Monstera, Caladium, and Calla lily. Native to the lower canopy of tropical forests in Central and South America, Brandi Philodendron thrives in high humidity and low light conditions, making it ideal for indoor gardeners with limited natural light.
Best Locations For Growing Brandi Philodendron
Display Brandi Philodendron where it can showcase its trailing growth. Hanging baskets are perfect, but training the plant on moss poles or trellises can also be very effective, often resulting in larger leaves and more vibrant variegation. Rooms with high humidity and lower light, such as a north or east-facing kitchen or bathroom, are excellent for this plant. Remember, all parts of the plant are toxic to pets and humans.
Brandi Philodendron Sunlight Requirements
This plant thrives in medium to low light conditions. In a west or east-facing room, place it across the room from the window or to the side. In a north-facing room, you can hang it directly in the window to maximize light exposure.
Brandi Philodendron Care
In its native habitat, the Philodendron is epiphytic, obtaining moisture through aerial roots from its stems. Encourage Brandi Philodendron to climb moss poles or pieces of wood, using its roots for stability. It prefers indoor humidity levels of 70-80%, so use humidity trays, daily misting, or cool mist humidifiers, especially during winter. Keep the plant away from heating and cooling vents or drafty windows and doors, as it prefers stable temperatures between 65-80°F.
Watering Brandi Philodendron
Water the plant when the top 1-2 inches of soil are dry. Consistent moisture and excellent drainage will help the plant thrive, with growth reaching up to one foot per year.
Feeding Brandi Philodendron
During the spring and summer, apply a diluted liquid fertilizer such as fish emulsion or seaweed extract. This additional nutrition supports the plant’s active growth period.
