Bubblegum ‘Toka’ Plum Tree earns its name at the first bite, with candy-sweet fruit and a spicy, bubblegum-like finish that’s hard to forget. It grows into a 15–20 ft. tall and 15–20 ft. wide tree with an open, vase-style canopy. This Japanese-American hybrid plum, Prunus salicina x Prunus americana, is also prized for its heavy spring bloom that can improve fruit set on nearby plum trees. We recommend planting it when you want one reliable tree for fresh eating and baking, plus a strong pollen source if you’re building out a small home orchard.
Bubblegum ‘Toka’ Plum Tree Care
Plant in early spring while the tree is still dormant, spacing trees 15–20 feet apart in full to part sun for best flowering and fruit quality. Choose well-drained sandy loam if possible, or amend native soil for drainage and a pH around 6.0–7.0. Keep mulch a few inches back from the trunk. Prune in late winter to maintain an open center, removing dead wood and a few crowded interior shoots so light reaches the fruiting branches.
Growing Bubblegum ‘Toka’ Plum Tree
Bubblegum ‘Toka’ Plum Tree starts producing 2-3 years after planting, with ripening typically landing in late summer to early fall once the tree is established. Give it plenty of room in the landscape, because good airflow helps keep foliage cleaner and supports heavier crops. This plum needs 800–1,000 chill hours, so it performs best in climates with reliably cold winters and steady spring weather.
Growing Bubblegum ‘Toka’ Plum Tree in Containers
Use a 25–30 gallon container with excellent drainage and plan to prune annually to keep the canopy balanced above the pot. Repot every 2–3 years and refresh the potting mix, since long-term container plums depend on renewed soil structure. Around the base, plant oregano, purslane, and zinnia for a low-maintenance edible container arrangement. In the landscape, grow this plum with irises, phlox, and Russian sage to fill the sunny space beneath and around the canopy.
Watering Bubblegum ‘Toka’ Plum Tree
Water deeply through the first growing season. Let the top few inches of soil dry slightly between soakings, but never allow the root zone to bake dry. Wilting new growth and undersized fruit are cues to water more consistently.
Feeding Bubblegum ‘Toka’ Plum Tree
Feed in early spring once growth begins with a balanced fruit tree fertilizer, and stop fertilizing by midsummer so new shoots can harden before winter. Once the tree is fruiting well, lighter feeding is usually enough: a compost top-dressing in spring can support crops without stimulating soft, leafy growth.
