Feature
The Coral Cactus (Rhipsalis cereuscula) is a slow-growing succulent native to the rainforests of Uruguay and Brazil. Unlike most succulents or cacti, this epiphytic plant thrives in shaded conditions, often growing on trees and rocks in the understory. It features slender, deep green branches tipped with clusters of small stems, resembling grains of rice. Its appearance accounts for one of the plant’s common names, Rice Cactus.
Best Locations For Growing Coral Cactus
Coral Cactus prefers high humidity and warm temperatures, making kitchens and bathrooms ideal locations. Avoid placing the plant near drafts from windows, doors, or heating and cooling vents. It can be grown in a hanging basket or incorporated into a plant display with other epiphytes such as orchids and Staghorn Ferns. Note that this plant is toxic if ingested, so keep it out of reach of children and pets.
Coral Cactus Sunlight Requirements
Filtered indirect bright light is best for this rainforest succulent. Direct bright light can fade its color and potentially scorch the delicate stems. A north-facing window or an east-facing room provides ideal conditions. The Coral Cactus can tolerate medium to low light and will require less frequent watering in these conditions.
Coral Cactus Care
As an epiphytic succulent, the Coral Cactus thrives in humid environments and obtains most of its moisture through aerial roots. It grows well in a pot with a fast-draining cactus potting mix. An all-purpose indoor potting mix is also suitable if extra perlite, sharp sand, or fine grit is added at a 1:1 ratio. Repot this slow-growing cactus only if it becomes top-heavy and needs more stability from a wider pot.
Moving the plant outdoors during the summer can boost growth and potentially encourage blooming. Allow it to acclimate to higher light levels gradually and place it in filtered sun, bright shade, or a covered entryway or deck. Bring the plant back indoors when nighttime temperatures fall below 50°F (10°C).
Watering Coral Cactus
Succulent cacti can endure long periods between waterings. Allow the potting mix to dry out between waterings, which should occur every 2-3 weeks, depending on humidity levels. In winter, reduce watering to once a month as growth slows significantly.
Feeding Coral Cactus
Apply a diluted cactus and succulent fertilizer once or twice during the spring and summer growing period. No fertilizing is needed in the fall and winter.
