Cherokee Brave Flowering Dogwood (Cornus florida ‘Comco No. 1’) dazzles with dark pink blooms that fade to a bright white center, announcing spring’s arrival in style. Each flower draws the eye in early March or April, contrasting gracefully with deep green foliage that follows. Leaves later transform to a bold maroon, setting the stage for red berries to appear in autumn. This compact ornamental tree tops out at 20- to 30 feet and is an excellent choice for front yards, mixed borders, or as a standalone showpiece in urban and suburban gardens.
Cherokee Brave performs well across varied soils, so long as drainage is sufficient and the pH remains slightly acidic. It appreciates morning sun and afternoon shade, making it an excellent fit for east-facing yards or partially sheltered positions. Wildlife flock to the glossy red berries that often persist into early winter, while deer typically avoid nibbling on the leaves. This low-maintenance variety requires minimal intervention, though moderate watering and well-timed fertilization help keep it at its best. Unlike many flowering trees, Cherokee Brave manages to combine superior cold tolerance (down to zone 5) with a splendid color display.
Cherokee Brave Flowering Dogwood Care
Select a planting spot that receives at least four hours of gentle sunlight daily. Consider placing it where harsh midday rays are filtered, particularly in warmer regions. Before planting, amend the soil with organic matter if drainage or fertility is lacking, and maintain slightly acidic conditions (pH around 5.5 to 6.0). Water deeply twice a week in the first growing season, then reduce frequency once roots take hold, focusing on deep intermittent soakings rather than constant saturation. Add mulch around the base to help regulate temperature and preserve moisture. If needed, fertilize with a balanced product in early spring, avoiding overfeeding.
Pruning typically occurs after flowering. Remove any damaged or overlapping branches, and thin lightly if the canopy becomes congested. For container-grown specimens, occasional root pruning may be necessary if they become pot-bound. In harsher climates, watering deeply before winter can help the tree handle lower temperatures. Where powdery mildew is common, ensure proper air circulation around the canopy to reduce fungal issues.
Cherokee Brave Flowering Dogwood Spacing
When planting multiple trees for a hedge or row, leave about 15 to 20 feet between trunks so each one can spread and develop its branching pattern. If used as a single focal point, keep enough room around it—20 to 30 feet of open space—to showcase its multi-season beauty. In containers, choose a pot around 18 inches wide or larger for a younger tree, then upgrade to a bigger container as it matures.
