Growing Zones
Cherokee Chief Pink Dogwood is grown for its rich rosy-red spring bloom, a color that brings more depth than the softer pink dogwoods most people know. Cornus florida 'Cherokee Chief' also earns attention for strong seasonal change, from cerise blooms in spring to burgundy-red fall color and bright red fruit later. It has a graceful layered habit and a manageable size that fits comfortably into home landscapes.
This deciduous native dogwood forms a rounded canopy with horizontal branching that gives it a calm, balanced look in the landscape. Red fruit follows the spring display and draws birds, adding another season of interest after flowering. It performs especially well as a specimen near woodland edges, in lightly shaded garden rooms, or in front of deeper green shrubs that make the flower color stand out. The layered branching also gives it a refined outline through winter after the leaves have dropped.
Cherokee Chief Pink Dogwood Care
Plant Cherokee Chief Pink Dogwood in full sun to partial shade, with protection from the hottest late-day sun in warmer parts of its range. It grows best in well-drained soil with an acidic pH, though it can handle loam or clay-loam ground if drainage is reliable. Keep it out of low areas where water stands after rain.
Water regularly during the first growing season so the root zone stays evenly moist while the tree settles in. After establishment, give it a deep soaking during dry weather, especially if leaves begin to look dull or slightly limp around the edges. Feed in early spring with a general-purpose tree or shrub fertilizer, and expect the tree to drop its leaves in fall after the red color develops.
Prune very lightly, mainly to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches after flowering or during dormancy. Avoid hard pruning, since the natural layered framework is one of the best parts of this tree. A mulch layer helps keep the roots cooler in summer, which is especially helpful for young trees during their first few seasons.
Cherokee Chief Pink Dogwood Spacing
Space Cherokee Chief Pink Dogwood 15 to 20 feet from nearby trees or structures so the canopy can develop its full shape without crowding. For large decorative containers, use it only as a temporary feature while young, since it is better suited to a permanent spot in the ground. In the landscape, pair it with hellebore, astilbe, and azaleas for a layered planting that carries color below the branches through much of the season. In nearby containers, begonias and lobelia make a good seasonal combination that picks up the bloom tones without competing with the tree.
