Chick Charms® Strawberry Kiwi Hens & Chicks or Sempervivum add year-round color and texture to a planting. Thick foliage comes to a point and grows in rosettes, giving these plants a symmetrical look. The bold red foliage features hints of greenish-yellow near the center, creating a striking contrast. These plants are evergreen, so they continue to provide a burst of color all year. The foliage turns a deep mauve during the winter.
The colorful foliage sets the Chick Charms® Strawberry Kiwi Hens & Chicks apart, but this beauty also blooms. Pink, star-shaped flowers bloom on top of tall stems during the summer. This mat-forming succulent can grow in zones 3 through 8 and will continue to expand year after year. Plant hens and chicks near the front of a mass planting, along walkways, or tucked into stone walls to ensure the plants stand out. Feature Chick Charms® Strawberry Kiwi Hens & Chicks in a container to display these beauties on a tabletop or railing and enjoy them close up.
Chick Charms® Strawberry Kiwi Hens & Chicks Care
Hens and chicks grow in full sun to partial shade. These plants thrive in well-drained, poor-quality soil. Hens and chicks have shallow root systems, allowing them to grow in rock gardens or areas with limited soil. Sempervivum is drought tolerant and can sustain itself with rainwater. Only water during an extended dry spell.
Cut back the flower stalks when the blooms fade, and remove dead or damaged growth as necessary. Chick Charms® Strawberry Kiwi Hens & Chicks are cold hardy and can survive cold winter temperatures, but they need protection from extended wet periods and poor drainage in winter.
Chick Charms® Strawberry Kiwi Hens & Chicks Spacing
Chick Charms® Strawberry Kiwi Hens & Chicks will grow 2 to 3 inches tall and spread 8 to 12 inches. Space plants 6 inches apart to create a dense, full planting. Give the plants more space, and offsets will fill the empty areas with time. These plants have a shallow root system, and 6 to 10 plants can be featured in a 12-inch pot.
