Chick Charms® Cranberry Cocktail™ Hens & Chicks forms a deep burgundy rosette finished with bright chartreuse tips. Sempervivum 'Killer' stays low at about 2 to 4 inches tall, spreading 4 to 12 inches wide as new chicks form around the main plant. The loose rosettes shift through green, red, and mahogany tones through the seasons, with the strongest color in plenty of outdoor light. Use it beside pale gravel or stone to highlight the two-tone foliage.

This Chick Charms® selection is a cold-hardy evergreen succulent with the classic hens and chicks habit of replacing older rosettes with younger offsets. Pink summer flowers may rise above mature plants, and any rosette that blooms will fade afterward while the chicks continue the display. Chick Charms® Cranberry Cocktail™ Hens & Chicks is drought tolerant, deer resistant, rabbit resistant, pet safe, and beginner friendly in dry, sharply drained soil. Plant it in rock gardens, wall pockets, dry edging, patio planters, waterwise gardens, troughs, and low groundcover-style groupings.

These drought tolerant succulents are very carefree once established, and great for beginner and expert gardeners. We recommend buying multiple Chick Charms® types to grow next to each other to create a colorful garden all year!

Chick Charms® Cranberry Cocktail™ Hens & Chicks Care

Plant Chick Charms® Cranberry Cocktail™ Hens & Chicks in full sun to filtered sun, with light afternoon shade useful during extended summer heat. It grows best in gritty, gravelly, sandy, or lean soil with excellent drainage. Acidic to neutral soil is suitable, but cold wet soil should be avoided.

Water after planting to settle the roots, then let the soil dry well before watering again. Established plants need little supplemental water in the ground, though container plantings may need occasional soaking during hot, dry stretches. Fertilizer is rarely needed, and rich feeding can reduce the tight color and compact form. Use gravel top dressing between the soil and leaves to keep rosettes away from damp surfaces.

Remove dried lower leaves when they loosen easily from the plant. After a mature rosette flowers, cut away the spent stalk and fading hen once nearby chicks have started to fill the opening. In rainy winter regions, grow Chick Charms® Cranberry Cocktail™ Hens & Chicks in raised gravel beds or containers that can be moved under cover.

Chick Charms® Cranberry Cocktail™ Hens & Chicks Spacing

Space Chick Charms® Cranberry Cocktail™ Hens & Chicks 6 to 10 inches apart in rock gardens, borders, and low succulent plantings. Use wider spacing when you want each rosette cluster to develop with visible gravel between plants. For containers, choose a shallow pot at least 6 to 8 inches wide with drainage holes, and use a gritty cactus or succulent mix.

In sunny waterwise beds, grow Chick Charms® Cranberry Cocktail™ Hens & Chicks near agastache and little bluestem, which handle open exposure and drier soil while adding height above the low rosettes. Include sea thrift to line a gravel path if drainage is sharp and the scale stays compact. In containers, add alyssum in a separate, slightly more moisture-retentive pocket along the edge while the hens and chicks sit higher in the driest part of the planter.
