Chicklet® Red Esperanza (Tecoma stans ‘SMNTSB’) draws the eye with clusters of scarlet trumpet-shaped flowers set against fresh green foliage. Each bloom opens in summer and repeats until frost, offering a bold shot of color that hummingbirds find irresistible. This compact shrub forms a neat mound around 3 to 4 feet tall, bringing a tropical look to backyard borders or patio containers. The slight yellow tint at the flower’s throat creates a subtle contrast that enhances its alluring appeal from week to week.
Deer generally leave this heat-loving trumpet bush untouched, and its adaptable nature shrugs off drought once established. Native to the warmer regions of the Americas, it proves an excellent choice for pollinator gardens where butterflies and bees appreciate the sweet nectar. Use Chicklet® Red Esperanza in mass plantings, edging, or as a focal point in container arrangements and enjoy its extended bloom season and minimal upkeep. This plant also does well in full sun along fence lines or near patios where passersby can admire the fiery show of color.
Chicklet® Red Esperanza Care
Provide a site with direct light for at least six hours daily to encourage prolific flowering. Plant it in well-draining soil and water moderately during the first growing season to promote a healthy root system. A balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring typically supports sustained growth and reliable blooms. Occasional mulching helps retain moisture around the base, but avoid soggy conditions.
Clip back any damaged or overly lengthy stems in early spring, as Chicklet® Red Esperanza sets flowers on new wood. Container-grown specimens require somewhat more frequent watering, especially in hot climates, and can be overwintered indoors in cooler zones. If you choose to keep it outside all year in milder climates, situate the pot in a protected spot when winter nights drop near freezing. In southern regions, it can remain outdoors year-round, needing only minimal pruning to tidy up its shape.
Chicklet® Red Esperanza Spacing
Allow roughly 24 to 36 inches between individual shrubs for mass plantings or row placements, giving them space to spread to their mature width of around 2 to 3 feet. If you’re potting a new Chicklet® Red Esperanza, choose a container at least 14 inches across so the root system can develop comfortably and the plant retains a balanced shape.
