Growing Zones
The rich foliage and laid-back care requirements of the Chocolate Chip Bugleweed make this plant a lovely and effortless addition to a landscape or walkway. The botanical name is Ajuga reptans, but this plant is also called carpet bulge. The glossy, elliptical foliage is green with some random copper and bronze hues, providing additional color. Fragrant indigo flowers bloom in spring or early summer.
The Chocolate Chip Bugleweed is a dwarf variety with a spreading growth habit. This shade-tolerant plant excels as a groundcover. Plant Chocolate Chip Bugleweed between pavers or on a steep incline to prevent erosion. The charming flowers look lovely near the front of a mixed bed or as a low border. The reaching stems cascade over the edge of a container. The Chocolate Chip Bugleweed is pollinator friendly and deer resistant and grows in zones 4 through 10.
Chocolate Chip Bugleweed Care
This plant can handle various levels of sunlight, but partial shade is best for the Chocolate Chip Bugleweed. Increased sunlight intensifies the deep, coppery tones of the foliage and encourages more prolific blooming. Water the plant deeply once each week if there is no rainfall. Bugleweed is not picky about soil, but grows well in rich, moist, slightly acidic soil that promotes drainage. Fertilize each spring to encourage plenty of foliage and flowers.
Pruning is unnecessary, although trimming leggy stems and faded blooms will encourage new growth and a full form.
Chocolate Chip Bugleweed Spacing
This is a ground-hugging plant that reaches 2 to 3 inches tall and is 6 to 9 inches wide. Space Chocolate Chip Bugleweed 6 to 9 inches apart to create a dense ground cover.
