The Proven Winners ColorChoice® Cityline® Mars Hydrangea is a very small and compact shrub with very unique flowers. The blooms range from red or pink with lime green edges, to blue and purple with white edges on the pedals. The flower pedals have a variegated look to them. The color is determined by the soil pH. Blue and purple flowers come from acidic soils. Red and pink flowers grow in more alkaline soils. These shrubs perform very well by the ocean, and prefer moist conditions. The plant is also mildew resistant, which helps in rainy areas.

Cityline Mars Hydrangea Care

These bushes do best in well-drained soil. We recommend amending the soil with peat moss or compost. Applying mulch will help retain moisture as well as adding extra winter protection, which may be necessary in colder climates with harsh winter conditions. Pruning Cityline Mars Hydrangea is not necessary, but if you choose to do so, trim immediately after flowering. This shrub blooms on old wood, so pruning in fall or winter will reduce the amount of blooms for the following year. You should also provide extra protection during winter to help keep the flower buds safe from the cold. If you plant this shrub in a garden planter, be sure to either move the plant indoors over the winter, or plant in the ground in the fall. Fertilize in early spring, using slow release fertilizer designed specifically for woody plants, such as roses.

Cityline Mars Hydrangea Spacing

Plant these shrubs 2 to 4 feet apart, center on center. To create a landscape border, plant these a little closer together, around 18 to 24 inches apart, center on center. These do great in containers, but need to be planted in the ground in the fall.
