The Proven Winners ColorChoice® Cityline® Rio Hydrangea has unique blue and green blooms that will draw anyone’s attention. New and experienced gardeners will both love this shrub for the uniqueness of the flowers and how easy it is to care for.
This hydrangea is compact but has very large flowers that bloom from early to late summer. The flowers range from purple to blue, with greenish variegated centers that last all season long. This plant is great for a standout centerpiece in any garden!
The Rio Hydrangea is also both salt tolerant and mildew resistant.
Cityline Rio Hydrangea Care
This macrophylla hydrangea is best planted in well drained soil. The plant needs moisture, but prevent it from getting “wet feet”. It will perform best in a location with at least 6 hours of sunlight, but in an area that also gets afternoon shade to help protect against hot summer days.
Pruning the Cityline Rio Hydrangea is not necessary. This plant is small and compact already, so there is no benefit of doing so. Also, the bush grows flowers on old wood. Meaning if you prune the branches at the wrong time of year, you could be cutting off next season’s flowers before the buds have had a chance to shine.
These plants are great in containers. If you do plan on growing these in a garden planter, be sure and provide extra protection in winter, especially in colder climates like zones 5 and 6.
Change the color of the flowers to a more blue color by adding aluminum sulfate to the soil in early spring before growth starts to emerge.
Cityline Rio Hydrangea Spacing
These small bushes should be planted 2 to 3 feet apart, center on center. If you choose to plant into a landscaping border, you can plant 18 to 24 inches apart, center on center. Use the same spacing guidelines if planting more than 1 shrub in a pot.
