Coconut A-Peel® Black-Eyed Susan Vine or Thunbergia alata is an evergreen vining plant that may just be your new favorite plant. This fast-growing vine is a natural climber that can grow up to 8 feet long. The vines are dotted with lovely 5-lobed cream-colored flowers with a black eye and glossy heart-shaped foliage. This plant is very low maintenance, so you can sit back and enjoy flowers throughout the spring and summer.

Use this vining plant as a thriller in containers or engulf a landscape with greenery. This plant is a climber, and if it is not given a trellis or something to latch onto, it will find something. Plants grown in hanging baskets typically climb up the hanging supports of the baskets, and plants without a trellis will reach along the ground until encountering another plant or a building it can climb. The Coconut A-Peel® Black-Eyed Susan Vine hails from the tropics of eastern Africa. It is heat-tolerant and grows as a perennial in USDA growing zones 10 and 11. The plant is grown as an annual in other zones.

Coconut A-Peel® Black-Eyed Susan Vine Plant Care

Use rich, loamy, and well-draining soil. Black-Eyed Susan Vine prefers soil with a pH of 6.8 to 7.7. Soil should be kept evenly moist so water when the very top layer of the soil starts to dry out. Potted plants will dry out more quickly and may need water daily, especially during heat waves or dry periods. This plant needs part sun to full sun, so select a spot that receives at least 4 to 6 hours of daily sunlight. Fertilize the plant every 4 to 6 weeks to keep the vine covered in blooms during the growing season. Feed potted Black-Eyed Susan Vine every 2 to 3 weeks to support healthy, blooming plants.

Deadheading is unnecessary, but pinch back spent flowers and remove overgrowth as needed. This plant will overtake a space, so redirect or trim back wayward vines. Black-Eyed Susan Vine can be brought indoors for the winter in cold regions, but be careful because this plant is a vigorous grower that needs space.

Coconut A-Peel® Black-Eyed Susan Vine Plant Spacing

Vines are a natural fit for hanging baskets, and the Coconut A-Peel® Black-Eyed Susan Vine will not disappoint thanks to its stems that can trail up to 8 feet in length. A 12-inch container is enough space for 1 to 3 plants. This plant can spread out 18 to 24 inches, but space the plants 14 to 16 inches apart so they will have enough room but slightly overlap and create a curtain of greenery and blooms.

Plant Addicts Warranty - 1 Year (Extra Purchase Required)

We encourage all plant lovers to purchase the Plant Addicts Warranty, whether you're a new gardener or an expert. There are many variables outside of anyone's control that can cause a plant to die. Hungry animals, drought, poor soil conditions, over watering, diseases & pests are all good examples of what can cause plants to die. The Plant Addicts Warranty is a 1 year warranty protecting you from all of the unknowns and will replace your plant if something were to happen to it.

The warranty is purchased on a per plant basis and must be purchased at the same time as the plant(s). We will cover 100% of the price of the plant, but the warranty does not cover shipping costs. SImply let us know if your plant has died within 1 year of receiving it and we will get you a new one shipped out as soon as possible (depending on the time of the year and availability). We may ask for photos for documentation purposes, but we try to make the process as easy as possible.

Guarantee and Warranty

Plant Shipping

Below are some factors we consider when determining when to ship the plants depending on the timing of the order.

Winter to Early Spring

We ship only when it's warm enough to plant in your growing zone.
Sometimes plants aren't completely ready to sell and ship in early spring. We will wait until the plants are ready before shipping so you don't get a subpar product.
For Southern plants we will be able to ship much earlier than plants coming from our northern nursery.

Summer

If there is extreme heat we may delay shipping for a week or several weeks.
We review what areas the plants are traveling through as well as your location.

Fall into Winter

We’ll ship plants out all the way up to the end of the fall planting season!

Winter

Get your order in early to reserve your plants for Spring planting!

Once your plant is shipped you’ll receive an automated email with tracking information.
