This shows how the plant is typically used in a container combo — Thriller (tall focal point), Filler (mid-height mass), or Spiller (trailing over the edge).
Tip: match plant habit to the role for the best designs.
Colorburst™ Orange Cape Fuchsia brings saturated, firecracker-orange tubular blooms that keep coming when many perennials settle into green. The curved flower clusters hang along the stems from midsummer into fall, delivering steady color with little maintenance. This selection, Phygelius × rectus ‘TNPHYCO’, quickly matures to about 3 feet tall and 2 feet wide, giving you real presence in a border or a large pot. We use it to add a strong warm note that also feeds hummingbirds.
The foliage is dark green and bushy, creating a solid base for the dangling trumpets and keeping the plant looking finished between bloom flushes. It’s an herbaceous perennial, yet it may stay partly evergreen where winters are mild, which extends its value in warmer regions. Nectar-rich flowers bring in hummingbirds, butterflies, and other pollinators, with less appeal to rabbits. On hillsides it helps tie the planting together, and in containers it supplies height and flower color without becoming top-heavy.
Colorburst™ Orange Cape Fuchsia Care
Set the crown level with the surrounding soil and avoid burying it under thick mulch. Provide filtered sun to partial shade or partial sun; in cooler climates it can take more sun, while hotter inland sites benefit from afternoon shade. Plant in organically rich, well-drained soil, and don’t worry about pH unless your soil is extremely alkaline or acidic. Water when the top 2 inches of soil are dry, especially through the first growing season, then allow slightly longer dry intervals once established, with best drought tolerance in cooler coastal conditions. Feed once in spring with a balanced slow-release fertilizer if your soil is lean; overly rich feeding can push soft growth.
Remove spent flower clusters to keep the plant tidy and encourage continued flowering along the stems. In colder regions, cut back to basal foliage in late winter or early spring after the last hard frost, and mulch the root zone for protection. Container plants in colder climates may need winter shelter to protect the crown from deep freeze.
Colorburst™ Orange Cape Fuchsia Spacing
Space plants 18–24 inches apart for a continuous planting, and allow extra room where the clump may broaden over time. For containers, use a pot at least 16–18 inches wide so the root zone stays more even through summer heat. Pair it with blue oat grass for cool, upright texture, Gaura for light, airy bloom movement nearby, and Agastache to extend pollinator interest with a contrasting flower form.
