Growing Zones
Lindera benzoin or the Common Spicebush, as it is often called, is a large and showy shrub with a number of uses. Growing to around 10 feet tall, Common Spicebush develops small green-yellow blooms before its aromatic deep green foliage and red berries appear later in the year. Loved by pollinators and birds, this shrub will help attract wildlife and even provide lovely fall color.
Easy to grow, the Common Spicebush forms an attractive upright form. It is suitable for growing in zones 4 to 8 and originates from eastern parts of North America. Often grown as a backdrop for other plants, the Common Spicebush is ideal for the back of a border, naturalistic planting and woodland areas.
Common Spicebush Care
As a tolerant shrub, the Common Spicebush is not fussy. However, if given its preference, it prefers partial shade and well-drained soil that has a pH of 5 to 8. It favors a moist substrate but can cope with dry periods as required. To help maintain plant health and support its growth, you can apply a general fertilizer in spring. Water well on planting and regularly thereafter until established.
In general, only light pruning for shape and size is required. The ideal time to prune Common Spicebush is after the flowers fade in summer.
Common Spicebush Spacing
When mature, the Common Spicebush can reach a size of 6 to 10 feet tall and wide. If planting as a group, you can space plants around 6 to 10 feet apart center from center.
