Common Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) stands out with its delicate, fern-like leaves and clusters of small, white flowers that appear from early to mid-summer. Reaching about 2 to 3 feet in height, it adds soft texture and brightness to garden beds, wildflower meadows, or cottage gardens. Its aromatic foliage and long-lasting blooms attract butterflies while resisting deer and other browsing wildlife. Unlike fussier perennials, Common Yarrow thrives in poor, dry soils and keeps its fresh appearance with minimal care, making it a versatile, drought-tolerant choice for beginners and experienced gardeners alike.

In addition to its appealing flowers and fragrance, this perennial tolerates a range of conditions, including full sun and poor soils. Originally found throughout the Northern Hemisphere, it’s widely used as a naturalized groundcover, in mass plantings, or as a meadow filler. Common Yarrow Care

Water regularly during the first growing season, then cut back to occasional watering as it matures and becomes drought-tolerant. A light layer of mulch helps retain moisture and suppress weeds, though this plant seldom requires fertilization. Removing spent blooms encourages a second flush of flowers, and dividing the clumps every few years maintains health and vigor.

Light pruning after flowering keeps Common Yarrow tidy and may prolong its blooming period. Shearing the plant back by about one-third once initial blooms fade promotes fresh growth and discourages flopping. For container-grown yarrow, refreshing potting mix and trimming roots every few seasons support consistent flowering. In colder regions, leave spent foliage intact for winter interest or mulch lightly around the base to protect roots.
