Growing Zones
The Contender Peach can handle winter cold and still set fruit after spring frosts, which is why northern growers keep coming back to it. This tree develops a rounded shape around 12–15 feet tall and 12–15 feet wide. Medium-to-large freestone peaches color up red-orange by mid-August and hold firmer texture than many cold-climate peaches, making Contender a better pick for slicing, canning, and freezing. We’ve had the best luck placing it where it gets early sun to dry the leaves quickly after dew or rain.
Contender Peach Care
Plant Contender Peach while dormant in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked, or in fall in milder parts of its range. Place it in full sun and keep the graft union above the soil line. Space trees 12–15 feet apart in sandy or loamy soil that drains fast with a slightly acidic to neutral pH around 6.0–7.0. Prune to an open-center vase shape in late winter to boost light and airflow and to keep height manageable.
Growing Contender Peach
Plan on harvest in mid-August, usually about 120–150 days after bloom depending on your summer heat. Heavier crops will start about 2–4 years after planting. Contender Peach needs roughly 1,000 to 1,050 chill hours, so it’s a better fit for cold-winter regions than the Deep South. Start with a young tree outdoors rather than indoors, and thin developing fruit to reduce limb breakage and improve final size.
Growing Contender Peach in Containers
Container growing is possible, but it takes commitment and a big pot, so plan on a 25–30 gallon container with excellent drainage. Repot every 2–3 years in early spring, refreshing the potting mix and lightly root-pruning if it becomes tight. In a patio setup it plays the thriller role, with seasonal fillers beneath it, such as marigolds and strawberry plants. Suitable landscape companions include bee balm and blueberry bushes.
Watering Contender Peach
Water deeply every other day for the first 2 weeks and then 1-3 times weekly through the first growing season. Once mature, shift to deep watering during dry spells, especially from bloom through harvest. Wilting in the afternoon that doesn’t recover by evening, and small hard fruit, are cues it’s time for a long soak.
Feeding Contender Peach
Feed in early spring just as buds begin to swell using a balanced, slow-release fruit tree fertilizer. Stop feeding by mid-summer so new growth can harden before winter. Light annual feeding supports better fruit size and keeps the tree building the one-year wood that carries next season’s crop.
