Cotton Candy Meadow Rue (Thalictrum ‘Cotton Candy’) adds a light touch to garden borders with its columnar stems and wispy lavender-pink blooms. Each stem emerges in late spring, carrying airy flower clusters that float just above delicate green foliage. Reaching about 38 to 42 inches tall and spreading 18 to 24 inches, this perennial draws pollinators while maintaining a graceful vertical presence. In our garden, its fine texture and refined color bring sophisticated charm to midlevel plantings.
Cotton Candy Meadow Rue hails from horticultural breeding and excels under a range of conditions. Deer and rabbits generally ignore it, and bees or butterflies appear whenever the buds unfurl. Many gardeners place it in groups along a shady border, but it also fits well in an open setting where dappled sun highlights its blooms. The tall stems hold up beautifully as cut flowers, making it a superb choice for bouquets that lean on softer pastel tones.
Cotton Candy Meadow Rue Care
Plant this selection in average, well-draining soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. A position offering at least four hours of sunshine supports flower production, though some relief from harsh midday rays can help avoid leaf scorching. Water moderately, allowing the top soil layer to dry between sessions, and apply a balanced fertilizer once a month during the growing season. If your soil is lean, a small dose of compost at planting time can promote a sturdy root system.
Remove spent flowers if you prefer a tidier look, though the plant often drops them naturally as summer progresses. Container-grown specimens need consistent watering and a light application of slow-release fertilizer in spring. Leaving mature growth in place through winter can add interest to a dormant garden, but you can trim it down if you favor a cleaner look. In colder climates, apply a thin layer of mulch around the root zone to help insulate during freezing weather.
Cotton Candy Meadow Rue Spacing
Allow 18 to 24 inches between plants for a cohesive yet uncramped display in rows or groupings. If potting, choose a container at least 12 inches wide to give the roots room to establish and the stems space to develop their signature pillar of foliage.
