Cranberry Cotoneaster, or Cotoneaster apiculatus, is a dense, spreading deciduous shrub which produces clusters of pink flowers in late spring. These flowers transform into cranberry-sized red berries that ripen in late summer. Adding additional interest, the Cranberry Cotoneaster bears glossy, wavy-edged round leaves that turn deep maroon red in autumn and early winter, making this impressive shrub perfect for any late season garden. The Cranberry Cotoneaster grows 2 to 3 feet in height, with a spread of 5 to 6 feet.

Native to China, the Cranberry Cotoneaster is a low-maintenance, fountain-shaped, dense grower with an upright, branching habit. The Cranberry Cotoneaster is vigorous and fast-growing, spreading quickly as the season progresses. It attracts songbirds and small animals of all types, due to its thick protective branches and ample berries. It is tolerant of salt spray and is an excellent choice for coastal gardens and landscapes.

Cranberry Cotoneaster Care

Cranberry Cotoneaster prefers full sun, but can tolerate some shade, so long as it's minimal. They are tolerant of a wide variety of soils, including poor soils. Once established, it is relatively drought tolerant, but new plants should be watered regularly. The Cranberry Cotoneaster requires minimal pruning, and should only be cut to enhance its natural, arching shape. In late winter, you can prune out a small portion of the oldest woods, as well as remove any dead or unusual branches.

Cranberry Cotoneaster Spacing

Cranberry Cotoneaster is especially beautiful when planted in masses. Plant it on a dry slope to decrease erosion, or use it as a bank cover or impenetrable, rustic hedge. When planting, space your Cranberry Cotoneaster 3 to 5 feet apart from center to center.
