Double Pink Rose of Sharon Tree turns late summer into a celebration, covering its tidy, tree-form canopy with ruffled, peony-style pink blooms. Hibiscus syriacus 'Double Pink' grows as a small deciduous tree with full pink double flowers from midsummer into fall when many spring shrubs have already finished. The layered blooms give the canopy a softer, fuller look than single-flowered forms, and the upright habit keeps it useful in smaller yards. We like it near outdoor seating because the flowers arrive during the part of summer when fresh color can feel harder to come by.
This hardy hibiscus is native to south China and Taiwan and is well adapted to heat, humidity, and urban garden conditions. Once established, it handles dry periods better than many flowering shrubs, though steady moisture supports heavier bloom. Butterflies, hummingbirds, and bees visit the flowers, adding movement around patios, mixed borders, and sunny foundation beds. Use it as a specimen, in a loose row, or as a flowering accent at the corner of a garden bed.
Double Pink Rose of Sharon Tree Care
Plant Double Pink Rose of Sharon Tree in full sun to partial shade, with the most flowers developing in at least 6 hours of direct sun. It grows in average, well-drained soil and adapts to sandy, loamy, or clay soil when drainage is adequate. A slightly acidic to neutral pH is ideal, though Rose of Sharon is fairly adaptable to garden soil pH.
Water regularly during the first growing season, keeping the soil moist but not saturated. Established plants tolerate short dry spells, but deep watering during long summer heat helps reduce bud drop and supports better flowering. Feed in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertilizer or compost, and expect this deciduous tree to drop its leaves in fall.
Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins, since Rose of Sharon flowers on new wood. Remove dead, broken, crossing, or crowded branches first, then shape lightly to keep the tree form open and balanced. Deadheading spent flowers or removing seed capsules can reduce unwanted seedlings in climates where Rose of Sharon reseeds.
Double Pink Rose of Sharon Tree Spacing
Space Double Pink Rose of Sharon Tree 6 to 10 feet apart, depending on whether you want a loose flowering row or room around each specimen. Use a 20-gallon or larger container with drainage for patio growing, and plan to water more often than in-ground plantings. Recommended companions in sunny beds include catmint, bee balm, viburnum, or sedum to add pollinator value.
