Growing Zones
These color-changing flowers are extraordinary! Dragon Baby™ Hydrangea paniculata is a dwarf panicle hydrangea, growing just 3 feet tall and wide. It produces masses of cone-shaped flower spires in summer and fall. Each cluster of flowers blooms with hues of soft green, transitioning to an intense pink color as they age. The long-lasting flowers remain on the plant through winter as a papery tan inflorescence held on reddish-brown stems. The ovate leaves provide great fall color in rusty gold shades.
The compact habit of Dragon Baby™ Hydrangea makes it ideal for small gardens and containers. Grow this small shrub as an accent plant in mixed borders, pollinator gardens, and cottage gardens. Use its low-growing, neat form in mass plantings to line walkways and for planting in front of taller trees and shrubs. The flowers of Dragon Baby™ Hydrangea are perfect for cut and dried arrangements.
Dragon Baby™ Hydrangea Care
Panicled hydrangeas are more tolerant of full sun than other species of hydrangeas. Dragon Baby™ Hydrangea can be planted in full sun, especially if it is receiving afternoon shade, or partial shade. Grow this shrub in moist, well-drained soil. Dragon Baby™ Hydrangea tolerates a wide range of soil conditions and pH levels. Keep your hydrangea watered well during its first growing season, and water it whenever the soil is excessively dry. Apply mulch to the soil to help conserve moisture.
Like other panicled hydrangeas, Dragon Baby™ Hydrangea blooms on new wood. The best time to prune this plant is in spring. To encourage more flowering, cut back a third of the hydrangea’s height as the new growth emerges.
Dragon Baby™ Hydrangea Spacing
Dragon Baby Hydrangea’s dwarf, compact form makes it easy to fit into any garden. Plant each shrub 3 feet apart to ensure room for growth and proper air circulation.
