Edgar's Baby Dragon Fruit is a compact climbing cactus delivering dessert right off the vine. Hylocereus hybrid 'Edgar's Baby' can be kept about 4 to 6 feet tall in containers with pruning, while supported outdoor stems may reach 10 to 15 feet or more with a 3 to 6 foot spread. Its fruit has pink to red skin, edible black seeds, and a sweet-tart tropical flavor for fresh eating, smoothies, sorbets, and chilled fruit bowls. We recommend it over larger dragon fruit types for patios because it trains cleanly on one post and can begin fruiting earlier under warm, bright care.
Edgar's Baby Dragon Fruit Care
Plant Edgar's Baby Dragon Fruit outdoors in spring after nights stay above 50 degrees, or keep it in a movable pot in cooler zones. Set it at the same depth it grew in the nursery container, provide one stout post or trellis at planting, and space plants 8 to 10 feet apart outdoors. Grow it in full sun, with part shade in extreme heat, in loose sandy or loamy cactus mix with a slightly acidic to neutral pH around 6.0 to 7.5. Excellent drainage is required.
Tip-prune after a flush to encourage branching. Remove any weak or tangled stems after fruiting to keep the crown productive.
Growing Edgar's Baby Dragon Fruit
Flowers open at night in summer, and fruit typically ripens about 30 to 50 days after pollination, sometimes closer to 50 to 65 days after bloom in cooler or indoor conditions. Harvest when the skin is fully colored and the fruit gives slightly. Refrigerate unwashed fruit for up to 5 days and eat chilled or blend the flesh into smoothies.
In cooler zones, grow in containers and move inside before nights drop below 45°F. Indoors or in a greenhouse, give direct light or strong grow lights and hand-pollinate open night flowers with a small brush.
Growing Edgar's Baby Dragon Fruit in Containers
Use Edgar's Baby Dragon Fruit as a patio fruit plant, greenhouse specimen, or edible arbor plant in warm climates. Choose a heavy 15 to 20 gallon container or larger with drain holes and a fast-draining cactus/succulent mix. Install a support wrapped with coco coir or burlap so stems can grip as they grow. Repot every 2 to 3 years in spring.
Watering Edgar's Baby Dragon Fruit
Water young plants when the top 2 to 3 inches of mix dry, soaking the base until water drains from the pot or reaches the root zone in the ground. Established plants prefer a dry-down between waterings. Wrinkled stems signal drought stress while yellowing or mushy tissue points to too much water.
Feeding Edgar's Baby Dragon Fruit
Feed from spring through summer with a diluted balanced cactus fertilizer or fruiting-plant fertilizer every 4 to 6 weeks while growth is active. Regular light feeding supports stronger stems, flower buds, and fruit fill, but stop feeding in cool weather when the plant slows down.
