Bring orchard-fresh flavor home with the Elberta Peach Tree, a classic, self-fruitful peach that’s famous for big, juicy, yellow-fleshed fruit with a rosy blush. It wakes up the garden each spring with clouds of pink blossoms, then rewards you in summer with freestone peaches perfect for fresh eating, canning, and baking.
Elberta grows into a graceful, sun-loving tree with a naturally spreading canopy that’s easy to prune. It’s cold-hardy for many regions, thrives in well-drained soil, and offers dependable crops when given full sun and regular care.
Elberta Peach Tree Care
Plant in full sun for 6–8+ hours daily. Provide well-drained loam or sandy loam with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0). Water deeply and consistently, especially from bloom through harvest: about 1 inch per week from rain/irrigation; in heat waves, water when the top 2–3 inches of soil are dry. Mulch 2–3 inches deep, keeping mulch a few inches off the trunk.
Feed in early spring with a balanced fruit-tree fertilizer (or ~10-10-10) based on label rates; a light midsummer feed is helpful in long growing seasons. Prune in late winter to early spring to an open-center (vase) shape for light and airflow; remove dead, crossing, or inward-growing wood. Thin fruit after natural June drop so peaches are 6–8 inches apart for larger, healthier harvests.
Elberta Peach Tree Spacing
Why Grow Elberta Peach Tree?
- Large, freestone peaches with classic, juicy flavor for fresh eating, canning, and pies
- Self-fruitful, so a single tree sets fruit; heavier crops with excellent sun and thinning
- Spring flower show, summer fruit, and a handsome, manageable canopy
- Cold-hardy across much of the U.S. and adaptable to well-drained soils
- Pits and leaves contain compounds that can be harmful if ingested; keep away from pets and children and never chew pits
