Electric Lights™ Double Pink Azalea sets the garden stage with lavish, double-petaled pink blossoms in spring. Rich clusters of these fragrant flowers envelop the plant and can last for several weeks, creating a remarkable show and drawing hummingbirds and pollinators. Its upright form stands around six to seven feet tall, while the width remains four to five feet—sized just right for borders or mixed plantings. After the flowers fade, soft green foliage takes center stage, transforming to burgundy in fall for a second burst of seasonal appeal.
A product of the University of Minnesota’s breeding efforts, Electric Lights™ is crafted for cold zones (to -30 °F) and delivers good disease resistance. Its growth habit remains upright, which suits the plant for layering in shrub borders or highlighting as a standalone focal point. Consider mass plantings, containers, or hedge-like arrangements to create strong visual impact in partially shaded settings or sunnier exposures.
Electric Lights™ Double Pink Azalea Care
When preparing the soil, aim for a pH level on the acidic side and add organic compost to boost drainage and nutrients. Space each plant far enough apart for airflow, then keep the root zone moist with steady watering—yet avoid waterlogged soil. The shrub performs best in full or partial sun, especially if mulched to stabilize soil moisture and discourage weeds. A balanced, acidic fertilizer applied in early spring supports sturdy growth and repeat flowering. If you spot leaves yellowing, you may need to adjust soil pH or add an iron supplement.
For pruning, wait until the flower show is done—usually late spring—then trim away spent blooms and any stray branches. Light pinching and thinning help maintain a full shape. For wintertime, a layer of mulch can protect roots from harsh conditions. If grown in containers, prune lightly to control size and ensure fresh growth each year.
Electric Lights™ Double Pink Azalea Spacing
Allow about three to four feet between shrubs in hedge plantings, so each one has enough room to expand without overcrowding. For a single specimen, space it more generously from neighboring plants to spotlight the azalea’s form. In containers, pick a pot approximately 16 to 18 inches in diameter for young plants, ensuring steady root development and easy re-watering. If the azalea outgrows its container, move it to a larger one, maintaining good drainage with a loose, rich, acidic potting mix.
