Low Maintenance

English Ivy is often considered an outdoor garden plant that can swallow a garden whole. Growing indoors as a houseplant, Eva English Ivy is relatively well-behaved and even loveable. The plant will dress up any bare corner or window when planted in a basket. The American Ivy Society selected 'Eva' as the ivy of the year for 2009.

Best Locations For Growing Eva English Ivy

Eva can grow in almost any location of the house. It prefers high humidity but will survive in average humidity and temperatures well. A bathroom or kitchen might be the best space for Ivy to have a spot to hang and stretch out. Keep Ivy out of areas where children and pets spend a lot of time. The leaves can cause skin irritation and are toxic if ingested.

Eva English Ivy Sunlight Requirements

Bright indirect light keeps the variegation of Eva bright and distinct. Any lighting lower than medium will make the leaves turn almost entirely green. Any spot near an east- or west-facing window is ideal.

Eva English Ivy Care

The potting soil needs to be rich and well draining. Using a mix for African Violets is perfect. Ensure the pot or hanging basket has plenty of drainage holes, so the roots do not spend too much time sitting in waterlogged soil. Regular pruning and pinching of the branches will make Ivy much bushier. The prunings can be used to develop new plants. Take a 6-inch cutting and remove all but the top few leaves. Place the stem in a small jar of water, and new roots will form on the stem within 2-3 weeks. These new plantlets can be potted on their own.

Watering Eva English Ivy

Ivy grows faster when it is in bright light and watered regularly. You may need to water 2-3 times a week during the summer to keep the soil lightly moist at all times. The soil can be left to dry between waterings during the winter. Check for dryness 1-2 inches under the soil every 10-14 days. Always empty saucers, so that the roots do not sit in water.

Feeding Eva English Ivy

Fertilizing only needs to be done during the summer. A balanced, liquid fertilizer should be applied every 2-3 weeks. Balanced fertilizers for houseplants support foliage growth as well as good root development.
