Evergreen Giant Liriope (Liriope muscari ‘Evergreen Giant’) earns its keep with arching, strap‑like leaves that hold a deep forest‑green tone through every season. By July, stout stems rise above the foliage and carry tight clusters of lilac‑purple bells, giving summer beds an easy pop of color without fuss. Each clump tops out around 18–24 inches tall and gradually expands to nearly the same width, creating a broad, graceful mound that masks bare soil better than bark mulch. Few groundcovers match its year‑round texture under maples and pines, or in courtyard containers.

Native to East Asia and selected for its larger form, this lilyturf tolerates heat, drought spells, and browsing deer while resisting most pests. Leaves stay evergreen in Zones 6–10, so pathways edged with Evergreen Giant keep their tidy border even after frost. Plant it en masse beneath open‑canopy trees for a calm, carpet‑like effect, or drop single clumps into mixed pots where the foliage acts as a draping skirt for bolder blooms. Its non‑running habit means it remains where you place it, making maintenance minimal.

Evergreen Giant Liriope Care

Set divisions or container plants in any well‑drained loam, clay, or sandy soil; pH from 6.0 to 7.0 is fine, though a touch of organic matter speeds establishment. Morning sun with afternoon shade produces the lushest leaf color, but part shade or high, dappled light also work; in hottest climates provide relief from mid‑afternoon rays. Water regularly the first summer, then irrigate only during extended drought—roots resent standing water more than brief dryness. A light spring feeding with a balanced, slow‑release fertilizer is generally all this liriope needs.

Shear ragged foliage back to 3 inches in late winter before new growth emerges, or simply comb out browned tips by hand in smaller plantings. Division is optional; if clumps exceed the desired width, slice the crown with a spade and relocate the sections in early spring. Container specimens overwinter outdoors to Zone 7; farther north, move pots into a frost‑free garage and keep the soil barely moist.

Evergreen Giant Liriope Spacing

For a seamless groundcover or walkway edging, place plants 18 inches apart on center; in mixed borders give each clump 30–36 inches so the foliage can arch naturally. Single plants fill a 12‑ to 14‑inch pot their first year; shift to a 16‑ to 18‑inch container as crowns enlarge to maintain root health and flower production.
